Noopept (R) is a registered trademark of Life Science Solutions Inc (USA).
From the chemicals point of view Noopept is a nootropic dipeptide with IUPAC name of N-phenylacetyl-L-prolylglycine ethyl ester.
It is also known as Neopept, Omberacetam and GVS-111, Ноопепт (Russian)
It was first synthetized in 1996 in a serious of similar dipeptides designed as analogues of pyroglutamyl-containing molecules, which we previously demonstrated to be highly active nootropics.
Noopept has a similar effect to phenylpiracetam (and other racetam family) and provides a mild cognitive boost after supplementation. Noopept also known for a subtle psychostimulatory effect.
Several animal studies suggest that Noopept has an anti-depressive effect, but so far there is only one study in humans showed that persons with cognitive injury there was less depressive symptoms associated with 20 mg Noopept for 56 days as assessed by MMSE, BPRS, and CCSE.
Noopept has a much lower standard dose than piracetam (10-30 mg, compared to 4800 mg), and it provides a general neuroprotective effect after supplementation. This neuroprotective effect occurs during various states of cognitive trauma, including oxidative stress and physical trauma.
Noopept's major metabolite appears to induce an anxiolytic effect in rodents.
In humans, one study evaluated 53 persons with cognitive ailment (37 with vascular cerebral damage and 17 with post-traumatic damage; 41 finishing the trial) at two daily doses of 10 mg of Noopept compared to the active control of Piracetam (1200mg daily) over 56 days noted universal improvement on parameters of vascular cerebral damage and improvement on half of measured parameters of trauma.
Noopept has general neuroprotective effects in research animals, and this has been confirmed in one human study with 20 mg oral Noopept; these studies mostly report a unanimous improvement in memory (secondary to reducing the decline seen with brain damage)
Although in USA Noopept is not approved by FDA to treat any medical condition it is sold and marketed as a supplement. More research is needed to determine exact mechanism of action, side effects and safety of Noopept.
